Black chefs are making big waves in the plant-based world, showing us that plant-based eating is about community, culture, and compassion. This Black History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on some incredible Black vegan chefs who are changing the game and inspiring people everywhere to embrace a more sustainable and delicious way of eating.
1. Bryant Terry
A James Beard Award-winning chef, author, and food justice advocate, Bryant Terry has been a major force in the plant-based movement. His cookbooks, such as Afro-Vegan and Vegetable Kingdom, fuse African, Caribbean, and Southern flavors with plant-based ingredients, making veganism accessible and culturally relevant. Terry’s work emphasizes the importance of food justice and empowering communities to adopt healthier, more sustainable eating habits.
2. Tabitha Brown
Actress, social media star, and vegan influencer, Tabitha Brown has captivated audiences with her warm personality and mouth-watering plant-based recipes. Her journey to veganism started for health reasons, but it quickly became a lifestyle and platform to promote compassion and wellness. Brown’s cookbook Feeding the Soul offers plant-based comfort food recipes with a soulful twist, showing that veganism can be delicious, fun, and fulfilling.
3. Charity Morgan
A classically trained chef, Charity Morgan gained fame for preparing vegan meals for NFL players and celebrities. Her plant-based creations are hearty, flavorful, and satisfying, proving that athletes can thrive on a vegan diet. Her new show, Unbelievably Vegan, is now streaming on Max.
4. Jenné Claiborne
As the creator of the online platform Sweet Potato Soul, Jenné Claiborne shares plant-based versions of beloved Southern and soul food dishes. Her recipes, featured in her cookbook and popular YouTube channel, focus on bringing traditional flavors to a vegan lifestyle while promoting health and sustainability.
5. Kriss Kofi
Kriss Kofi is a Jamaican-American plant-based chef known for his innovative vegan Caribbean cuisine. Growing up in Miami and starting his culinary journey in his father’s Jamaican restaurant, he later trained at the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York. After serving in the U.S. Army, he opened plant-based restaurant Dub N Grub in Miami Gardens, FL with his wife. Chef Kofi has been featured in Bon Appétit and continues to promote plant-based eating through his flavorful Afro-Caribbean dishes.
6. Aisha “Pinky” Cole
Founder of the wildly successful Slutty Vegan restaurant chain, entrepreneur and former television producer Aisha Cole has made plant-based “fast food” mainstream and accessible. With flavor-packed burgers and creative side dishes, Cole has introduced countless people to the joys of vegan eating.
7. Babette Davis
Babette Davis is a plant-based chef, fitness enthusiast, and owner of the popular vegan restaurant Stuff I Eat in Inglewood, California. Since adopting a vegan lifestyle, she has inspired many with her commitment to health and wellness. Through her food, social media, and public speaking, she promotes plant-based nutrition, fitness, and self-care.
