Dunkin’ Is Walking Away From Commitment to Customers and Animals
Whether you eat meat, are vegetarian, or vegan, having more delicious plant-based products available is a good thing for you, the planet, and farmed animals. A recent poll found that 1 in 4 Americans are eating less meat. This shift towards plant-forward eating is something many fast-food chains are embracing by adding delicious plant-based meat to their menus.
In 2019, Dunkin’ rolled out the Beyond Sausage Sandwich to its more than 9,000 US locations and launched a massive nationwide advertising campaign with celebrity spokespeople and free samples. The campaign centered around the health and environmental benefits of the plant-based breakfast sausage, highlighting the advantages of eating a reduced meat diet. David Hoffmann, Dunkin’ Brands Chief Executive Officer, and President said at the time, “We are proud to collaborate with this industry leader to become the first US restaurant chain to serve a Beyond Breakfast Sausage option.”
While the company touted record sales, attributing the spike to the plant-based sandwich, last week Dunkin’ quietly pulled the meatless menu item from thousands of locations. This means customers in these areas are unfortunately unable to now enjoy a delicious, nutritious, and affordable meat-free breakfast sandwich.
World Animal Protection has reached out to Dunkin’, urging the chain to reinstate the plant-based item nationwide, but the chain has failed to take action. Why would Dunkin’ pull the Beyond Sausage Sandwich from thousands of locations after sharing with customers how it’s better for the planet and their health, not to mention benefiting the company’s bottom line?
Instead of expanding plant-based menu items like their competitors, Dunkin’ has made the awful decision to move backwards and is making it harder for its customers to reduce their meat consumption.
