Protecting NYC’s Pigeons

NYC’s pigeons don’t get the respect and love they deserve, but that’s changing thanks to grassroots activists.

People have mixed emotions about the pigeons of New York City. Some revere them as a key part of the city’s urban landscape, while others think they’re a nuisance. However, as much as anyone else’s, NYC is their home, and they should be treated compassionately. Unfortunately, pigeons are subjected to cruelty—they’re sold in stores and trapped and shipped off to be killed as shooting targets. Thankfully, New York’s animal advocates are fighting back.

Protests organized by Pigeons 4 Miles and Mother Pigeon, and Pigeon Fest reveal that the local pigeon community is alive and thriving. World Animal Protection supports their great work and continues to champion the rights of all birds in New York City.

Protesting for Pigeons

Pigeons 4 Miles and Mother Pigeon held a protest in Brooklyn on April 12 to draw attention to the cruel practices by the owner of Pigeons on Broadway, including the trapping and selling of pigeons to be used as live targets in shooting ranges. World Animal Protection stands in solidarity with organizers —Pigeons 4 Miles and Mother Pigeon—joining fellow advocates, artists, and bird lovers in speaking out against the mistreatment of pigeons in our city.

This is part of a broader problem of birds being commodified and mistreated in New York City. Our presence sent a clear message: birds are not products; they deserve to be safe and free.

Pigeon Fest

Following the protest, World Animal Protection was present for Pigeon Fest, a vibrant celebration of the beauty and charm of NYC’s pigeons. The event showcased art, music, educational talks, and community spirit to honor these misunderstood animals. We gave out flyers that explained how we’re working to shut down the retail sale of birds, including parakeets, lovebirds, canaries, and even pigeons. We built relationships with other NYC bird rescuers and advocates to build a better future for all birds.

Keep Birds in the Sky

We can build a kinder and freer future for pigeons and all birds in New York City through collective action. Here’s how to help:

  • If you live in NYC, tell your councilmember to support a bill banning the sale of birds in pet stores.
  • Live somewhere else? Sign our pledge never to buy a bird from a pet store.
