Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With These Mouthwatering Plant-Based Recipes
Blog
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15, honors the cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans.
The theme of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month is “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.” Across America, traditional Hispanic dishes are being recreated into plant-based versions, all with a better future in mind—one that is kinder to both animals and the environment. We can’t think of a better way to honor this year’s theme!

Dora’s Table explains that pozole is derived from the Nahuatl word “pozolli,” which means “frothy,” referring to how the dish’s white corn looks when boiled. Try out this chicken-friendly version that swaps in chopped mushrooms.
Avocado Empanadas
Sometimes, there’s really nothing better than a crispy empanada stuffed with your favorite filling. These avocado empanadas from My Colombian Recipes are sure to satisfy your empanada craving, especially when paired with a fresh cilantro dipping sauce.
Dominican Sancocho
Sancocho is so popular that a plethora of variations exist all throughout several Latin cuisines. We’re huge fans of the veganized version from Dominican Cooking, which features yuca, mushrooms, plantains, and plenty more.
Green Paella
One of the most well-known (and well-loved!) Spanish dishes, paella is the ultimate comfort meal, composed of rice as the base and dotted with hearty proteins. The Spanish Chef puts a plant-based twist on paella by incorporating eggplant, broccoli, and spinach.
Alcapurrias
Alcapurrias are traditional Puerto Rican street food fritters deep-fried to crispy perfection. Plant Based Boricua stuffs her alcapurrias with a vegan meat substitute and pairs them with rice, beans, and plantains.
