5 Black Animal Activists Who Inspire Us

Celebrating Black leaders in animal advocacy.

This Black History Month, join us in honoring five Black activists making a difference for animals every day.

1. Soul Eubanks

Christopher “Soul” Eubanks is the founder of APEX Advocacy, a nonprofit focusing on expanding the community of Black and BIPOC individuals in the animal activism space. Soul has spoken about the racial imbalance amongst employees and activists in animal rights and aims to create a more diverse community of animal advocates while also leading campaigns against factory farming and promoting a plant-based diet.

2. Lizzo

It’s true that Lizzo is an iconic pop sensation, but she also follows a vegan diet! After being vegetarian for several years, Lizzo made the jump to eliminate animal products from her meals entirely. As an advocate for eating an animal-free diet, Lizzo eats plant-based to feel “good as hell” in conjunction with her passion for body positivity.

3. Paula Kahumbu

Dr. Paula Kahumbu is a wildlife conservationist, filmmaker, and CEO of WildlifeDirect, where she led the “Hands Off Our Elephants” campaign—with Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, the former First Lady of the Republic of Kenya—to help end elephant poaching in Kenya.

4. John Salley

Not only is John Salley the first NBA player to win a championship in three different decades (with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Detroit Pistons), but he also is a passionate animal rights advocate who has been vegan for 30+ years and has lobbied Congress for more plant-based meal options in public schools.

5. Dr. Amie Breeze Harper

Dr. Amie Breeze Harper is a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant and educator, as well as the founder of the Sistah Vegan project that explores Black vegan women’s perspectives on topics like animal rights, ecological sustainability, social justice, and nutrition.

When we celebrate and make space for all voices to join our movement to protect animals, our movement strengthens.
