Plant-based and good for the planet!

According to a press release shared with World Animal Protection, Just Salad, a fast-casual chain with more than 40 locations in the United States, is partnering with Zero Foodprint (ZFP), a James Beard award-winning nonprofit organization co-founded by restaurateur, chef, activist, and author Anthony Myint, to expand regenerative farming in the northeastern US. Just Salad will donate fifteen percent of sales from the Zero Foodprint Salad, a new menu item featuring plant-based Violife Feta, to the nonprofit, which provides grants to farmers switching to regenerative farming practices that restore soil health and sequester carbon.

Just Salad has continuously demonstrated its commitment to sourcing humane and sustainable ingredients. Earlier this year, the chain released its annual sustainability report  that highlighted the company’s efforts to be more environmentally friendly, including reducing carbon emissions by adding more plant-based options. This year’s report included major milestones for Just Salad’s protein diversification and carbon reduction efforts, including information on Just Salad’s partnership with Daring Foods™ plant-based chicken, the reformulation of its smoothie menu to remove dairy, and new plant-based meal kit options. What’s more, in 2019, Just Salad replaced grass-fed beef with plant-based Beyond Beef© balls. The salad company offers customers three plant-based protein options that are more sustainable and kinder to animals–Daring chicken, Beyond Beef, and tofu.

World Animal Protection applauds Just Salad for continuing to expand its plant-based options and investing in a more sustainable food system. Each of us has the power to help with this transformational change by reducing our consumption of animal products and committing to only purchasing from higher welfare sources. While this may require trying new foods and doing a little bit more research into what we eat, this will have a lasting impact that will greatly improve the lives of farmed animals, help our planet, and benefit our overall health.
