Angel
In 2016, the ASPCA was responding to an unprecedented farm animal rescue in Westport, Massachusetts, where thousands of animals were found living in horrific conditions on a single tenant farm. The scale of neglect was immense and required emergency intervention, making it one of the largest farm animal cruelty rescues ever undertaken in the Northeast. As part of that effort, the ASPCA reached out to sanctuaries across the region for help. Tamerlaine was asked to take in 21 goats from the farm, animals whose condition was so severe that they were initially too sick to be transported.
Because the goats could not be moved safely, the ASPCA constructed a large emergency triage site just down the road from the property where the abuse occurred. For more than a month, veterinarians and responders worked around the clock, providing food, medical care, and stabilization. Only once the animals were strong enough were sanctuaries like Tamerlaine asked to step in.
Tamerlaine had hoped that by the time the goats arrived, the worst would be behind them.
But when the animals reached the sanctuary, Tamerlaine staff’s hearts sank.
Even after weeks of care, the goats were painfully thin, their coats hanging loosely over fragile frames. They still looked tired. They still looked sad. It was impossible not to imagine what their bodies must have endured before help ever came.
And then there was Angel.
Out of all 21, he was the smallest.
Tamerlaine had taken in several babies from the rescue, each of them scrawny, underdeveloped, and vulnerable, but Angel was the tiniest of them all. He could have fit in the crook of your arm. You have never seen such a cute little goat.
Tamerlaine named him Angel immediately. It felt right.
From the very beginning, Angel lived up to his name. Not only because he was adorable, but because he was gentle, affectionate, and impossibly sweet. Visitors instantly fell in love with him. Volunteers sought him out. He had a quiet way of making people soften the moment they met him.
What was most suprising though, was how the other goats responded to him.
As Angel grew stronger, he did not push or posture. He did not demand space or attention. He simply was calm, steady, and kind. Over time, he rose within the herd not through dominance, but through trust.
When Tamerlaine’s beloved head goat, Jasper, passed away, there was no dramatic shift or struggle for leadership.
Angel simply stepped into his hooves. Not through bullying or bravado, but by being exactly who he had always been. Sweet. Wise. Steady. Loved by all.
Watching Angel grow from the smallest and frailest goat in a massive cruelty case into the quiet leader of Tamerlaine’s herd has been one of the greatest joys. He is living proof that healing does not always look loud. Sometimes it looks like gentleness, resilience, and love.

Many animals were emaciated, chained, confined without ventilation, or left without food and water. Many did not survive.
