Aphrodite, Calliope, Freya, & Athena
Known as The Frankfort Four, Aphrodite, Calliope, Freya, and Athena are red foxes born in 2025 at an unaccredited zoo that was later closed due to USDA violations. Aphrodite, Calliope, and Freya are sisters. The four of them came to Black Pine after the closure and remain together in sanctuary.
Red foxes roam more of the planet than any other canine species, and they’re impressive athletes. They can run up to 31 mph, jump over 6-foot fences, and swim, which makes them a great triathlete! Males are called dog foxes, females are vixens, and they typically mate for life. Red foxes are naturally skittish, shy, and very active. All of that is part of why they don’t make good pets. The fur and pet trade has produced up to 70 color “morphs” that don't typically occur in nature, which is a reminder that these are wild animals whose needs can’t be bred out of them.
