General Mills announces it will source 100% Cage-Free Eggs

News

Another victory for egg-laying hens comes after General Mills announces that it plans to transition to 100% cage-free eggs.

“We applaud General Mills on its commitment to working towards sourcing 100% cage-free eggs for its U.S. operations. This change will have a tremendous positive impact on the lives of millions of hens. It also reflects growing consumer demand for more humane food. We urge General Mills to share updates of its progress with the public as it transitions to sourcing only cage-free eggs, and we encourage all major food businesses to continue strengthening their animal welfare policies,” says Kara Mergl, our U.S. Manager of Corporate Engagement.

General Mills’ commitment to offering only cage-free eggs shows that the treatment and well-being of laying hens is increasingly critical to consumers.  Cage-free farming is better for hens, allowing them to move freely and express their natural behaviors. It’s also safer for people, as scientific evidence shows that diseases like salmonella can spread more rapidly among caged flocks.

Even if the animal appears happy, there’s severe cruelty going on behind the scenes
