From highway billboards to sand sculptures, we made sure Six Flags’s leadership team felt the pressure from our campaign.
For this year’s World Elephant Day, we went back to New Jersey to pressure Six Flags into releasing Joyce and the other four elephants held captive there to a sanctuary where they can live their lives in peace.
From highway billboards to sand sculptures, we made sure Six Flags’s leadership team felt the pressure from our campaign.
1. Two highway billboards near Six Flags
Less than 20 miles from the amusement park, we launched two highway billboards calling out Six Flags for keeping elephants in unnatural and unsafe conditions. We decided to keep our message short and to the point: FREE JOYCE!
Live in New Jersey? Both billboards are located on Route 9, with one facing north and the other facing south until September 1.
2. Joyce sand sculpture in Long Branch, NJ
We partnered again with local sand sculpture artist John Gowdy, but this time, our campaign caught attention in Long Branch, a city less than one hour from Six Flags.

Created on the beach right next to the town's shopping center (Pier Village), the sand sculpture brings Joyce’s story to life. The sculpture will stay put for weeks, thanks to an eco-friendly glue paste, as long as no one messes with it!
3. University of Maryland highlights our partnership and seismic study
To celebrate World Elephant Day, the University of Maryland published an article on its website highlighting results from our seismic study confirming Joyce and the other elephants feel vibrations from surrounding roller-coaster and safari trucks.
4. Our supporters sent personalized emails to Six Flags leadership
A week before World Elephant Day, Six Flags held its Q2 earnings call, and because the company has blocked our server, we asked our supporters to email Six Flags directly, urging it to shut down the elephant exhibit for good.
