Maya bear

Her suffering has ended

Maya, the former \"dancing\" bear is preparing to live the rest of her life in a sanctuary, free from suffering.

Last month we told you about four-year-old Maya, a bear who was forced to "dance" and entertain people. She faced unimaginable cruelty every day of her life.

But now we have good news to share just in time for the holidays - Maya has been rescued!

She was finally surrendered to our local partner in Pakistan after living in torment for years as a dancing bear.

Maya is currently in quarantine at our partner Balkasar sanctuary in Pakistan, getting the medical treatment she has so desperately needed.

When she woke from sedation after her check-up, she was relieved to notice the painful ring – which was used to control her for so long – was removed and she is now free from abuse.

Once she is well enough, she will be released into the main enclosure at the sanctuary with the other bears.

She is slowly gaining her strength back, and reportedly loves bread!

Her owner was also provided with an alternative livelihood working at a general store. This will allow him to provide for his wife and three children without resorting to bear dancing ever again.

A special thanks to our supporters for their generosity in helping bring her home. This is one holiday gift she will forever cherish.

Once she is well enough, she will be released into the main enclosure at the sanctuary with the other bears.
